It would come from Italy, brought in the area by commercial which sold candies with caramel called "berlingozzo". The Nantais confectioners very quickly thrived thanks to the trade of sugar between France and the Antilles at the XIXth century and the Berlingot became one of the most famous specialities of the city.
If the Berlingots Nantais remain a speciality of the Country-of-the-Loire, they gave rise to the Berlingots of Cauterets, thanks to the many curists Nantais come to follow care in the Pyrenees.
